QoS in wireless Mesh Networks - Implementation and evaluation of 802.11e EDCA

Assigned to: Kristian Beilke

Advisor: Anatolij Zubow

Expected Submission: September 2007

Problem Statement

  • Which problem do you want to solve?

Implementing the IEEE 802.11e-2005 Standard in the JiST/SWANS BRN Simulator to measure the effects of the fairness modifiying capabilities in the EDCA function. In the end it shall be known, what kind of traffic under which conditions can be improved and whether the use of EDCA is desirable in a mesh network.

  • To which domain of Computer Science does this problem relate to?

Practical Computer Science, Simulation, IEEE Standard

  • Why is the problem interesting? Why is it difficult?

802.11e is a relatively new standard, which has rarely been implemented in the wild. There seems to be no evalutaion of its use in a mesh network. It will be hard to check the correct implementation since there is no authority that might verify it. An idea would be to let different simulators work together (ns2).

Deliverables

  • At the end of the project, what will you have delivered?

The EDCA implementation in JiST/SWANS BRN simulator.

  • What does it mean that the project was successful?

It will be known, whether the QoS abilities of 802.11e EDCA improve the BRN (a mesh) network.

Prior Art

  • Who are your competitors? What are they doing?
  • How is your work different?
  • List of publications related to your topic.

Key Ideas / Project Execution Plan

  • How will you approach the problem?

Implement EDCA in JiST/SWANS. Testing.testing, testing. Measuring, measuring, measuring. Write down how implemented. Evaluate measurement.

  • On which contributions of others do you depend on?

The already implemented DCF functionality in JiST/SWANS BRN.

Project Log

  • What you have done so far? What You plan to do next?

DONE: 4 concurrent Access Functions. basic TXOP implemented.

NEXT: test compliance first measurments

TODO: correct Protocol behavior. other 802.11e capabilities (Block Ack, No Ack)

maybe new metric based on QoS.
