History of the Berlin Roof Net project

  • Summer 2004: First ideas discussed (when systems architecture group was created)
  • Fall 2004: Attempt to port OpenEmbedded to Linksys WRT54GS - not completed; decided to used OpenWRT instead
  • Early 2005: OpenWRT ported to Linksys WRT54GS, including Click and click-based implementation of DSR routing algorithm
  • Spring 2005: Linksys WRT54GS platform abandoned in favor of Netgear WGT (Netgear's WLAN card has Atheros chipset, for which adriver sources are generally available. Driver can be used more flexibly than closed source driver on Linksys, which was distributed in binary form)
  • Spring 2005: OpenWRT, click ported to Netgear WGT platform; Software Development Workbench for Netgear platform made available.
