Transaction processing monitors are operating systems (environments) for business systems whose applications are usually written in languages like COBOL. TP monitor systems automatically manage the entire environment of a business application, including transactions, resource management, and fault tolerance. Business logic running in TP monitors is made up of procedural applications which could be accessed via network messaging or remote procedure calls (RPC).

Today, TP products like CICS and TUXEDO are in widespread use.
